Poor Things Synopsis
In an alternate Victorian London, Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), a physically deformed scientist, performs a macabre experiment to save the life of a young woman who leaps off a bridge. He achieves this by transplanting the brain of her unborn baby into her own head, reanimating her.
He names her Bella (Emma Stone) and embarks on an ambitious endeavor to accelerate her mental growth to match her physical development. In this endeavor, he is aided by Max McCandles (Ramy Youssef), a budding surgeon who falls deeply in love with this vivacious and unrestrained woman-child. However, Bella, grappling with her identity as a “flawed, experimenting person,” finds herself drawn to a life of unfettered exploration and sexual liberation.
Amidst Bella’s gleeful and unfiltered exploration of life, she grapples with her identity as a flawed and curious being, unapologetically indulging in self-discovery, including a frank approach to her sexuality. Sensing the impending constraints of an arranged marriage and a confined life, Bella embarks on a journey to experience the world before the ties tighten.
Her sexual odyssey takes her through Lisbon and beyond, accompanied by the debauched lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo). Along her travels, Bella’s experiences awaken her to the harsh reality of her limited independence, realizing the pervasive attempts of men to dominate and restrain her.
